There is so much hierarchy in occupations that we frequently fail to see the beauty in many professions. Before reading Kazuo Ishiguro's "The Remains of the Day," I never considered butlers to be a fascinating occupation. The book is about a butler named Stevens, who also serves as the story's narrator. The decorum with which Stevens serves his lord, Lord Darlington, is thought-provoking. Stevens recounts things in flashback while on a break, including a road trip to meet Miss Kenton. Stevens and his previous boss, Miss Kenton, have a mutual attraction, but neither expresses it. Stevens' loyalty to Lord Darlington is unquestioned, since he sacrifices his feelings for duty. The Remains of the Day is about the thwarted life of a butler who sacrifices his passion of life for the respect of his trade.
